The Rock plays a retired FBI operative who becomes an amputee when a wartime rescue mission goes horribly wrong, which means he spends the entirety of Skyscraper wearing a prosthetic. Knowing full well that the regular Rock would simply grab the skyscraper by the base and shake the terrorists out, this film has gone to the trouble of removing one of his legs. Still, God bless Skyscraper for at least trying to make The Rock look vulnerable. There will be no meaningful peril whatsoever, because The Rock is a superhuman. He’ll hug his family, punch everyone a hundred times, do a cool jump and save the day. But The Rock’s on the case, so everything will be OK. Nobody on Earth can relate to The Rock on any level at all, because The Rock is The Rock and nobody else is The Rock. ![]() Immediately, everything becomes so much better. But there’s one key difference – The Rock is in it. From everything we’ve seen about the film so far, Skyscraper is as shameless a Die Hard rip-off as anything you’re ever going to see. With a simple kick, and the element of surprise, Sawyer saves his daughter's life, and kills Kores.In short, thank goodness for Skyscraper. Botha is tricked into believing Sawyer is in front of him, when actually he's standing right behind him. Instead, he uses The Pearl's unique technology to his advantage: The actual pearl ornament atop the building is filled with glass panels adorned with inside and outside cameras, which can either make the walls "disappear" or transform the surroundings into a suped-up fun house of mirrors. Thankfully, Will doesn't make the same mistake twice. ![]() It's there he finds antagonist Kores Botha (Roland Møller), who's using Will's daughter as shield, echoing the disastrous standoff from 10 years earlier. The opening of Skyscraper is set 10 years before the main story, when Johnson's Sawyer was an FBI agent who specialized in hostage rescue. ![]()
